I was brought up with a lot of passion, particularly for football. My Dad was one of the most devout Geelong fans you could ever meet. And from as early as I can remember, we cheered through every Geelong game. We stood out in the rain, we watched on tv, we wore our stripes with pride, and there was never a question of who to barrack for in our house.
I spent my whole life hoping to see a Geelong premiership. And finally, in 2007, my Dad and I sat at the MCG and saw our beloved Cats win one of the most amazing Grand Finals of all time. He passed away just months later. I was so grateful to be able to share that with him and I can still see his face so clearly – full of relief, gratification, and adoration, his heart almost bursting with happiness. We spent the ride home as if in a dream!
It was wonderful to share the love of the game and the Cats with my Dad. I have so many memories of cheering along with him, side by side. I hope I can pass on that passion to Sophia.
With the anticipation of another premiership this weekend, I found the cat my Dad kept in his office at work. Faded and dusty, but treasured. And I can still hear my Dad yelling “Carn the Cats”. And what more perfect a subject could there be for Day 23 of the September Challenge – Sport.
GO CATS! M x
